How much health insurance cover do I need?

Many families in Indian metros start with 10 to 20 lakh. A super top-up is a cheap way to add more cover on top of a base plan.

Why 5 lakh is often not enough

Private hospital costs in big cities can go beyond a few lakh for a serious illness or surgery, and costs rise every year. A low sum insured can run out in a single admission.

A practical way to choose

Consider the city you live in, the ages of everyone covered, and any family history of illness. Older members and cities with expensive hospitals need higher cover.

Also check your employer cover. It helps, but it ends when you leave the job, so keep a personal plan too.

Use a base plan plus a super top-up

A super top-up pays once your bills pass a limit called the deductible. For example, a 5 lakh base plan with a 20 lakh super top-up that starts after 5 lakh gives you 25 lakh of total protection, usually at a much lower premium than a single 25 lakh plan.

Look beyond the sum insured

Check room rent limits, waiting periods for pre-existing conditions, co-payment clauses and whether your preferred hospitals are in the cashless network. These decide how much you really get at claim time.

Common questions

Many families start with 10 to 20 lakh as a floater and add a super top-up. The right amount depends on your city, ages and existing cover.

A plan that pays after your claims in a year cross a chosen deductible. It adds high cover at a low premium on top of a base policy.

Usually after a waiting period that varies by insurer. Always disclose them honestly on the proposal form.
