How to start a SIP with 500 rupees

Complete KYC, pick a fund that matches your goal and time horizon, set an auto-debit of 500 rupees a month, and raise the amount every year.

What you need

A PAN card, Aadhaar, a bank account and a mobile number linked to them. You complete a one-time KYC, which can be done online for most investors.

Pick the goal first

Decide what the money is for and when you need it. A goal under three years away should not sit in a risky fund. A goal ten years away can take more risk.

A single diversified fund suitable for your goal is enough to begin. You do not need five funds on day one.

Set up the auto-debit

Choose the monthly date, preferably just after your salary arrives. Set the amount to 500 rupees if that is what fits today.

Raise it as you earn more

Small amounts grow slowly, so increase your SIP each year. A step-up SIP raises the amount automatically by a fixed percentage, which can make a big difference over ten to twenty years.

Do not stop your SIP when markets fall. Falling prices are when a SIP buys more units.
