Step-up SIP: why raising your SIP each year matters

A step-up SIP raises your monthly amount by a set percentage each year, which can grow your corpus much faster than a flat SIP.

What is a step-up SIP

A normal SIP stays at the same amount forever. A step-up SIP increases it by a fixed percentage every year, for example 10 percent, so your investment keeps pace with your income.

Why it helps

Income usually grows over a career, while a flat SIP shrinks in real terms as prices rise. Stepping up keeps your goal on track without a big jump in any single year.

See it with your own numbers

Compare a flat SIP with a step-up SIP for the same starting amount, return and years in the SIP calculator on this site. The calculator shows how much the step-up adds to your final amount.

Returns are assumptions, not guarantees, so use a conservative rate when planning.

How to choose the step-up

Match it to your expected salary growth. A step-up that is too high may be hard to keep, so pick one you can sustain through bad years too.

Common questions

Many people choose 5 to 10 percent, in line with expected salary growth. Pick a figure you can actually sustain.

Usually yes. Most funds let you modify or stop a step-up SIP.

It carries the same market risk as any equity SIP. The step-up changes how much you invest, not the risk of the fund.
